Today, we are so excited to share part of Corey and Roberta’s story with you. They have married for 10 years and they are sharing how they have lived out the vow “In Sickness and In Health” every day in their marriage:
“In our first two years of marriage my wife and I suffered two great losses late in pregnancy. After our first loss at six months, I didn’t know how to love her. How to reassure her that we were going to be ok. As time passed things got better and we became pregnant again! Because of our first pregnancy, our stress level was high. We were going to the doctor every time we felt something was wrong. The doctor put her on bed rest, we were almost there at 7 1/2 months. A few days later I was at work and I got a call from my wife, she was in so much pain she could barely speak. I rushed home and the ambulance was already there. They had my wife in the back of the ambulance. I ran in to get clothes, came out, and my wife had given birth. The baby was stillborn. I just stood there as the EMT cried and my wife screamed. For a moment it felt like a bad dream. My wife had developed an infection and it had spread to the baby. We vowed that we were done. No kids for us it just wasn’t meant to be.
For a full year I fought depression and my wife was distant and we just weren’t sure about our marriage. On an early Sunday morning, I got up and went to church. I hadn’t been in over six months. The sermon that day was perfect for me, “Birthing something inside of you.” It was about Abraham and his wife Sarah and how God made a way for Sarah to get pregnant at the age of 90! Up to that point she was unable to conceive.
I went home excited and motivated. That night while my wife was sleeping I laid my hands on her stomach and asked God to bless us with a child. A month later we were pregnant! We were anxious, and our physician diagnosed my wife with an incompetent cervix which meant that she could not hold the weight of the baby. They gave us one option and advised that we would have to fly to Chicago to see a specialist about a new procedure.
We went home discouraged. My wife got online and researched the procedure. She stumbled across a doctor at a local hospital that could do the surgery. There were only four in the country and one of them was right up the street! We met with the doctor and he advised that we would be accepted into the trial. It was a rough nine months. I had to administer daily shots and numerous needle pricks every day to my wife. She cried a lot and I prayed a lot. My beautiful wife sacrificed her body to grow our family and God blessed us with a healthy baby boy! Three years later we did it again! God is good! This is a true testament to the love God has for us and what happens when you have faith. If you are going through a difficult season in your marriage, trust God! God will make a way!
